North Coast Academy (NCA) was established in December 2000 as conceived by the Simon Youth Foundation as a consortium school to serve at-risk high school students under the auspices of the Educational Service Center of Cuyahoga County. The consortium includes 13 northeastern Ohio school districts and is supported through grants from the Ohio Department of Education (Alternative Schools Advisory Council) and Simon Youth Foundation.

North Coast Academy offers an option that is different from the traditional school setting. Located at Richmond Town Center above Sears, NCA has an intensive self-directed curriculum that offers flexibility for students to recover credits and/or to accelerate their progress in high school. There are two separate three-hour sessions each day with a capacity to serve 50 students in each. Additional elective requirements in writing, career exploration, social skills, community service and a financial literacy course provide student participants with valuable competencies. NCA uses a unique collaborative team approach with the computer-based curriculum that enables participants to progress at individual rates toward the accumulation of credits for graduation. This factor provides intrinsic motivation for students to progress and succeed in school at their own pace.

North Coast Academy’s staff includes a director (principal), four certified teachers, an administrative assistant and a math tutor.
